QUICK TIP: Catching the Moment

moment_osullivan

As humans we are drawn to emotion. So much so, that as a photographer, in order to actually catch that emotive moment I have to separate myself from it slightly. Here is what I mean. You might be photographing a group and all of the sudden someone does something outrageous causing the entire group to erupt in laughter. You will think it was hilarious too, but you HAVE to separate yourself well enough to keep shooting! This can prove difficult because of your desire to connect with the people you are photographing. It is human nature to want to be on the “inside” of a tribe rather than the outside. While shooting an event or wedding you will get so wrapped up in the emotion of the day and will start connecting with certain people even though they may not be connecting with you. Because you are behind the lens in a voyeuristic mode, you will see and experience things that those people will not realize you experienced with them. It is a funny world being behind the lens, but for those of you out there that have a hard time not getting wrapped up in it all, remember: it is better to get the shot than to get the joke.
