The old saying goes, there is nothing new under the sun. As artists we get inspiration from other artists. If you try to be an island, most likely you will fail. Copy copy copy! One of the best assignments you can give yourself is to copy an image that you love and try to do it better. Go online or (take a deep breath now) go to the library, and find some inspiration. There are some really phenomenal images to be seen from the past and the present. The day before every wedding I take some time to look through a bunch of photos from books and on the internet to get my juices flowing. I most likely will not get the opportunity to shoot those inspiration shots, but eventually they always resurface at another wedding. Many of my favorite images that I have taken were shot as a direct copied ideas from another photograph. I just happen to like the way I did it better!
The above is one. The copied image was from a flat perspective but I liked the idea of shooting the paper with the date and the couple’s rings and made it my own by shooting at a lower angle. I had that image in my mind for about 6 months before all the elements worked together for me to shoot it. It is one of my favorites.
