Carrie Benuska is a local Realtor who specializes in the city of San Marino. Unlike most Real Estate Agents, Carrie decided to get her photo taken by someone other than the passport people. She looked around at several professional photographers and landed on me. I find it odd, the very people who rely on their photo to draw people in end up using the most boring photo or even worse, a head shot they had taken over 20 years ago. To be honest, if someone showed up looking 20 years older than what I expected my immediate reaction would be “bate and switch” and I would not do business with them. What a waste of time for both of us! Carrie is different: honest, sincere, and most of all so much fun! We had such a great time walking the grounds of Mayfield Senior School in Pasadena. I love shooting there because there are so many little nooks and crannies. Shooting one person is very different than shooting a couple or a group, because YOU have to be the one to interact with them. The trick is to get them to be active. Direct them to walk, stop, turn and look at you. Show them their mark and do it several times. It is sort of like acting. Your focus will be on their mark so if they don’t quite hit it, just do it again. It will be a much more inviting photo. Have them sit somewhere and lean in towards you. Think of how you feel when you talk with someone and what their body language is. If they are sitting towards you leaning in a bit, they are more interested in what you are saying. Portrait photography has a lot to do with human psychology. It would be beneficial for you if you are a photographer to read a book on the subject. Also try to get them to giggle a little. A fake giggle goes a long way since they will feel silly doing it they normally laugh for real. Here are a few of my favorites.
