I am blessed to have a toddler who is very normal: he won’t sit still for photos. How to get them to stay put, now that is the question. Toddlers, while not well versed in their speaking skills are, in fact, quite able to understand what we say. A recent photo I took of Jacob was only captured because quite literally bribed him. He would not sit on the chair and while he was casually walking away I asked him in a calm voice that if he sat back on the chair and let me take a few photos of him that I would give him an M&M. He stopped in his tracks, turned around, walked right back to the chair, climbed up, sat down, and stared right at me. He actually let me have at it for 5 minutes and then wanted his prize. I am not saying you should regularly bribe children, but as a photographer, you will want to check with the parents before hand what the best thing to offer their toddler may be in a tough situation. Toddlers, while smart, are the most stubbornly illogical and irrational people on the planet. If you want a good photo, you have to pull a few tricks and treats out of your sleeve. The above shots were taken as a result of the offered M&M.
