I am blessed to have a toddler who is very normal: he won’t sit still for photos. How to get them to stay put, now that is the question. Toddlers, while not well versed in their speaking skills are, in fact, quite able to understand what we say. A recent photo I took of Jacob was only captured because quite literally bribed him. He would not sit on the chair and while he was casually walking away I asked him in a calm voice that if he sat back on the chair and let me take a few photos of him that I would give him an M&M. He stopped in his tracks, turned around, walked right back to the chair, climbed up, sat down, and stared right at me. He actually let me have at it for 5 minutes and then wanted his prize. I am not saying you should regularly bribe children, but as a photographer, you will want to check with the parents before hand what the best thing to offer their toddler may be in a tough situation. Toddlers, while smart, are the most stubbornly illogical and irrational people on the planet. If you want a good photo, you have to pull a few tricks and treats out of your sleeve. The above shots were taken as a result of the offered M&M.

DIY Marketing Printing

I am a big fan of DIY projects. When it comes to my brochure printing, I love being able to have full control over things and also be able to change things up when I want to. I just purchased another color laser printer because it was 50% off and I do most of my brochure printing on them. I have the older HP Color LaserJet 2600n with ColorSphere technology. The only reason I bought the new HP Color LaserJet CP1215 is because it is smaller and it was 50% off at Office Max. After plugging it in and running off a few test prints, I was floored at the quality. It is so much better than my 2600n. I love (and sometimes hate) how fast technology gets better! The only issue with the new printer is that it only works from my PCs and not my Mac. So if you have a PC, you need to get this machine. At $150 (normal price $300) there is only everything to gain!

There were so many incredible wedding specialists there and I had the opportunity to speak with some of the most stylish brides and grooms on the planet! I look forward to working with many of you!:)

Jacob’s Sunday Best

Little Man, Jacob is a brave kid. He climbs up the craziest things and oddly seems to have perfect balance so far. I once caught him standing on his bedroom window sill. My heart just about fell onto the floor! When on the playground, he is very aware of the drop distance and always seems to contemplate his potential success rate.20090829_IMG_0057_jenosullivan

Studio Practice: Keeping a Calendar

20090912_dayplanner_jenosullivan-2Keeping track of your daily happenings can be overwhelming especially if you own your own business. Many entrepreneurs who are in the creative fields don’t always do just one thing. While my main and most beloved part of my business is actually shooting weddings, I also do a few other things: I teach bookbinding, book design, and photography, and am a business coach and mentor, along with holding a few choice corporate clients that I shoot for during the week once or twice a month. For me, I have 4 different business areas to keep track of. Weddings, Corporate, Teaching, and Business Meetings. Because I am a visual person, I have everything color coded with my trusty highlighter pens in my day planner (yes, you read that correctly, I still use paper and ink for my calendar.) I have everything on my computer as well, so my iPhone is always up to date, but I mainly go off my hard copy. What is really great about using highlighters is that I know exactly what hat I will be playing that week and on what day. Here is a break down of how things look:

Yellow = Shoot Wedding    Orange = Shoot Non-Wedding    Blue = Business Meeting    Pink = Teaching
Anything not a color is purely social or family related.
The above photo is a typical month for me.
